The access road leading to the Marine Corps recreational beach facility at San Onofre Beach was threatened due to erosion and flooding. The goal of the study was to provide preliminary engineering analysis and a cost estimate for a measure to preserve access to the beach facility.
WEST conducted a site investigation and performed preliminary engineering analyses for measures to reduce flooding and erosion damage caused by San Onofre Creek to the access road and facilities at San Onofre Beach. A secondary task involved design of protective measures for the road at a dip crossing further upstream on San Onofre Creek. Specific tasks undertaken included field reconnaissance, hydrologic analysis, hydraulic modeling (using HEC-RAS), study of ocean processes, preferred alternative development, riprap design, preliminary cost estimate development, meetings and coordination, and study report preparation.
The Camp Pendleton Office of Public Works used the study results to request funding for the protection measures.
